Office 2016 got a lot of keynote love at Ignite, but Microsoft did spill some more info on the pacing of SharePoint 2016.

SharePoint 2016, showcased at Ignite, will be released in preview version later this year. "[SharePoint Server 2016] will deliver enhancements and new capabilities across new user experiences, compliance and reporting," stated a press release, which also gave a nod to the on-premise version's cloud connections: "The new version gives on-premises SharePoint customers access to new capabilities in the cloud through hybrid deployments with Office 365."

We learned last month that Microsoft was taking the "2016" in "SharePoint 2016" literally--and would be releasing the platform next year. This came after speculation that there wouldn't even be an on-premise version of SharePoint and Microsoft's eventual assurances that, yes, there would.

We can't know just what to expect from the new on-premise version, but it's a safe bet that it won't be your father's SharePoint Server.

Stay tuned as we learn more about SharePoint 2016.
